Bethel International Church Edmonton Oromo Congregation

MCA’s Annual Delegate Sessions in Lethbridge will feature several new faces as a new church is presented for membership.

Over the last year and a half, MCA leaders, pastors, and members have been in conversation with the Bethel International Church Edmonton Oromo Congregation, exploring a potential relationship. Bethel is a two-year old congregation made up of Oromo-speaking immigrants from Ethiopia.

On a typical Sunday afternoon 30-40 adults and a number of children gather for worship in an Evangelical Lutheran building just off Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue. Their pastor Mezgebu Tucho (pictured)  is a visionary church planter who has helped start churches around the world.
In conversations about conference membership, Bethel’s leaders have affirmed their desire to be part of the Mennonite church. They have been searching for a spiritual family for connection and spiritual grounding. They see the benefit of relationships beyond their own culture as they navigate what it means to be the church in our North American society. They are eager to engage with MCA in mission, seeking to “expand the kingdom of God with the message of peace and reconciliation.”
We look forward to hearing more of Bethel’s story in Lethbridge, and pray we might develop ever-deepening connections in the months and years ahead!
