Joint Council Update

The Joint Council of Mennonite Church Canada met on April 6 and 7 in Calgary. In case the name “Joint Council” doesn't immediately connect, it is the board of Mennonite Church Canada which is comprised of the moderator ( Brenda Tiessen-Wiens from Mennonite Church Alberta) and a member at large from each of the regions (me), along with a general moderator, a vice moderator, and a secretary/ treasurer (Allan Hiebert- MCA).  The five Executive Ministers from each region ( Tim Wiebe Neufeld-MCA) and the Executive Minister of MC Canada ( Doug Klassen as of June 1) meet along with the Joint Council.

Our meetings were held at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Center.  Some of the agenda of the meetings was to update and support each other in the activities of the Regional Churches.  We also made recommendations about policies and structures of the nationwide church, and worked together on joint initiatives like updating the websites, involving young adults in the church, and planning the gathering of Mennonite Church Canada in Abbotsford, BC, June 28-July 1.

On Saturday evening we were hosted by Foothills Mennonite Church to sing together, to share stories of what is happening in Mennonite Church nationwide and in the Alberta region, and to visit informally.  The weekend of meetings was exciting to be part of as we, together, sought to discern and make space for the ongoing presence of God among us.
